Chemotherapy/Radiation Aids

Remedies

For radiation burns

Aloe If you are burned by a radiation treatment, cut an aloe vera leaf and apply the gel to the burn as soon as possible. Use a fresh plant only. Reapply frequently throughout the day. The skin should grow back normally.

Cod liver oil Apply the oil to the burned area. May be used in the mouth as a gargle or rinse.

For chemotherapy problems

Mouth fissures

Patients undergoing chemotherapy frequently get fissures at the corners of their mouth. The American Journal of Medicine reported that these fissures completely disappeared in a significant number of people who applied vitamin E to them.

Mouth ulcerations

Nearly everyone who undergoes chemotherapy experiences ulcerations inside the mouth. To remedy this situation make an oral rinse with chamomile tea and take during treatment.  Research has discovered that 75% of the people using the rinse didn't develop ulcerations. Chamomile has both anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties which may account for its success. People undergoing radiation often develop dryness and elevated acidity in the mouth, which can lead to tooth decay. The chamomile rinse will help in this situation, too.

For nausea

One of the most unpleasant side effects of chemotherapy is nausea. See our nausea section for some useful tips and remedies.

Acupuncture may be helpful in relieving nausea caused by chemotherapy. The acupuncture point is on the inside of the forearm, two thumbs up from the inside of the wrist crease between the two tendons. Get between the tendons with your finger and apply pressure for a few minutes on each arm. This method is good for other forms of nausea, too, such as nausea caused by pregnancy and seasickness. If you have trouble using this method go to an acupuncturist for some instructions.

Sesame oil Use on damp skin and let it soak in. It helps relieve sore, dry skin due to chemotherapy. Use regular sesame oil, not the roasted Oriental type.
